Australian Cane Farmers Association (ACFA)
Established in 1987, the ACFA is a voluntary and independent association representing canegrowers in Queensland and New South Wales.

Australian Sugar Milling Council (ASMC)
ASMC was established in 1987 to represent Australian raw sugar mill owners. It is a voluntary mill representative organisation which acts as a policy forum and service provider to mill owners.

BSES Limited (previously Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations)
BSES Limited was established in September 2003 and is owned by Australian sugarcane growers and millers. It is carrying on functions previously undertaken by the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations, including research and technical advice to industry with regard to soils and agronomy, agricultural engineering, cane breeding, biotechnology, entomology, pathology, sugar milling technology and sugar quality.

Queensland Canegrowers Organisation Limited (CANEGROWERS)
CANEGROWERS was originally established in 1926 by Queensland statute to represent the interests of Queensland canegrowers.  For many years State Government regulations made it compulsory for all cane growers to belong to CANEGROWERS but since 2000 membership has been voluntary.  CANEGROWERS currently represents around 83% of Queensland sugarcane growers.

Cane Production Boards
Cane Production Board's role previously included administration of cane production areas and expansion agreed by the Negotiating Team and making guidelines about land use, environment, transport and matters relevant to cane growing. All Boards were dissolved at the end of 2004.

Department of Primary Industries & Fisheries
This Queensland State Government department is responsible for overseeing the Sugar Industry Act. The Minister for Primary Industries & Fisheries is Hon Tim Mulherin, Member for Mackay.

Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL)
Queensland Sugar Limited is a company limited by guarantee, owned by the growers and millers of Queensland.  The company is accountable to the industry through its 35 members, which include the mill owners and a representative each from Australian Cane Farmers Association and CANEGROWERS organisation.  The company is the marketing body for most of Queensland’s annual raw sugar production.

Sugar Authority
The Sugar Authority previously monitored the performance of Queensland Sugar Limited and received applications from mill owners to be granted exemptions from the statutory vesting arrangements.  The statutory vesting arrangements, and the Sugar Authority, were dissolved at the beginning of 2006.


Sugar Terminals Limited (STL)
STL is an industry owned company established to own the bulk sugar terminals. STL has an industry shareholding, with initial share entitlements calculated based on the value of sugar production in seasons 1989 to 1997.

Sugar Research & Development Corporation (SRDC)
Established by the Commonwealth Government in 1990, the SRDC is responsible for identifying and funding strategic research and development activities for the raw sugar industry in consultation with the industry and enters agreements with research organisations to conduct research. It also funds sugar industry research and development projects.

Sugar Research Institute (SRI)
Founded in 1949, SRI is the research and development arm of the Australian raw sugar industry. Research activities include cane harvesting and transport, cane preparation, milling and diffusion, juice clarification, heating and evaporation, sugar crystallisation, separation and drying, steam generation and energy systems and effluent treatment.
