The Office of the Sugar Industry Commissioner was established to administer regulatory functions of a non-marketing nature. The Commissioner's functions are contained in the Sugar Industry Act 1999, and include -
Harvesting Disputes
The Commissioner can grant access rights over land to assist in the harvesting of cane and supply of cane to a mill:
- permit to pass to give a sugar cane grower access over other lands to harvest or deliver sugar cane
- cane railway easement to allow a mill owner to take sugar cane to a mill
Access rights can be granted by the landowner and registered on the Commissioner's Access Rights Register.
The Commissioner may:
grant, vary or cancel access rights
order compensation; or
appoint a valuer to decide fair compensation
